Good Use - The Customer is Always Right Essay -- Teaching Writing Educ

Good Use - The Customer is Always RightDoes I respectfully submit my resignation, convey the akin meaning as, I quit? Certainly the tone of voice is different, but do these two phrases say the same affaire? Which one is correct? In answering these questions we are making finiss ab discover what constitutes technical example in writing techniques. According to Orwells Advice for Writing, one should, Never use a long word where a short one will do. Following this line of thinking one would logically conclude that I quit, a phrase of only five characters in length, is by far the better choice when comparing it to the thirty-two character alternative, I respectfully submit my resignation. However, on that point may just be a bit more to proper usage in writing than choosing between longer and shorter words/phrases of the same meaning. In fact, the most important aspect of usage may just be the audition for which the writing is intended. (in other words, its not the size that count s, its whose using it) For example, J. D. Thomas points out that in practiced writing, Efficient communication depends upon a middle range... or writing that will be utilized by people with varied educational/technical backgrounds. Technicians use jargon that may not be understood by an otherwise well educated person. Therefore, if a technician wants to write a paper explaining close to revolutionary way of manufacturing to a potential investor, shes going to have to adjust her writing to suit her audience so as to successfully convey her message. However, the same paper would have to be amended to include specific, object-oriented terminology if it were targeted towards the technicians peers. Another important aspect of good usage, according to T. Cliffo... ... audience is the determining factor of good use. The two phrases mentioned earlier, I quit, and I respectfully submit my resignation, illustrate the power the audience has in writing. Without knowing for whom the phrases a re intended, the author cant make a decision between the two. I quit, is short and to the point, but who is the writer talking to? Will the abrupt nature of the phrase cause tension or will the audience simply ignore it as insignificant babble? If its an employer that she is expecting a good reference from, perhaps, I respectfully submit my resignation, is the way to go. On the other hand, if coldcock value is the intent of the writer, an entire realm of discontinued-employment phrases may become appropriate. Metaphorically speaking, the audience is the customer in the department store of writing styles, and the customer is ever right.

The Concept of the Sublime In Relation to America Essay examples -- Ph

The Concept of the princely In Relation to AmericaThe eighteenth and nineteenth centuries witnessed a revival of the concept of the howling(a). The Sublime, as a notion, first reached position theorists by way of Nicholas Boileau-Desprauxs translation of the Greek text attributed to Longinus titled On the Sublime, which discussed the Sublime within writing. The work categorized sublimity as raising men almost to the intellectual greatness of God (Longinus, 76). Once raised to extreme intellectual heights the authors were then able to raise others to the limits of their being. In short, the effect of the Sublime is transport (ekstasis) - it is a quality of a passage which shatters the hearers composure, (Abrams, 308) due to the heightened ability of the writer. Longinus concept of the Sublime reached further fruition when discussed in Edmund murders Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful and Immanuel Kants Critique of Judgment, as well as in works by Dennis, Addison, Hume and poets Wordsworth, Thomson, and pound who attempted to clarify and diversify the concept. America, a land bubbling over with sublime images, added real-world value to the discussion as such, the literature, philosophy and art during Americas exploration of itself focused on the image of the sublime as a means of breaking from the past, of discerning power and of forging a new identity. Causes of the American Revolution :: Essays on American Revolution

During the late seventeen hundreds, many tumultuous eventsresulted in Colonial opposition to capital Britain. The conditions of rightsof the colonists will behind be changed as the parsimony of theparliament becomes more and more intolerable. During the Seven Years WarEngland was not only alarmed by the colonists insistence on trading withthe enemy, but also with capital of Massachusetts merchants hiring James Otis in order toprotest the legality of the writs of assistance (general search warrants) utilize to hunt out smuggled goods. let the parliament recline what burthensthey please on us, we must, it is our duty to submit and patiently bearthem, till they will be pleased to relieve us..... This is a very strongdictum, that in 1764, the colonists were of a submissive nature, and wereweakly pleading for self-autonomy. This small fire of anger will become ahuge conflagration as the rights are slowly rescinded. On October 19, 1765 the Stamp Act Congress and ParliamentaryTaxation c ommittees passed some laws that attempted to strengthen thegrip of the English crown. This statement canbe used as a summation of the entire document that the Stamp Act Congresshad initiated. The statement depicts the colonists has having to besubmissive and servile in the view of Great Britain, this policy angeredthe colonists very much, and was another component of the transition ofthe colonists rights and liberties. When the Declatory Act was passed in March of 1766, many colonieswere attempting to claim that they were seceding from England. Decision in Philadelphia Essay

The book purpose in Philadelphia the governanceal Convention if 1787 by Christopher and mob Collier offers a unique look at the scribing of the Constitution and the events that not only surrounded it but led up to its creation. The authors take on the events and their creative writing sort make the book and enjoyable and fact filled read on one of the demesnes most important events. They begin with a historical look at the events that led up to the signing and a brief synopsis of the events that were occurring in the earth at the time. The background that they give provides a swell base for the information and allows the reader to see things through the eyes of nearone living in the time. One of the more(prenominal) interesting parts of the book comes archeozoic in which the author tells the reader of how there were many supposes that were using militias to control the events occurring in the states. In many of my previous reading there had been mention of the states haug hty their own laws and universe able to enforce them but I was una state of ware of the extent. I was also unaware that in Massachusetts that the government and the proceedings were being controlled by the merchants and the upper class. It was interesting to read about how there could be such a diverse set of governments ruling different parts of the country with virtually no centralization. When the congress was first formed and the laws were laid out there was only a requirement for the states to meet once a family in November and that put an unnecessary burden of the delegates to try and align their thinking with other states. This theme would play itself out as the constitutional traffic pattern evolved and wore on. there were many challenges facing the country at the time that would impact the constitutional convention and the outcomes that would shape the country. One of them being that there was very poor expatriation routes and that adversely affected communications. The few interstate roads that existed were frequently nothing more than mile upon mile of mud wallow, cut by hundreds of streams, creeks, and rivers, most of which were unbridged so they had to be forded, or crossed by ferry. (Collier, 2007) This lack of infrastructure led to many difficulties in communication and travel which meant that the diversity in the country was more often than not unknown to each other. The country was divided not only by the vast physical size but also by religious sects, sparing differences and ethnic and language differences. It was certainly time to establish the constitution and begin to align the peoples of the country under a united set of rules and a centralise government.James Madison was a key player in what would become the centralized idea to unite all these different pockets of civilization that had formed since the country had been settled. The authors point out that Madison though it was a good idea for George working capital not to attend t hese meetings because if things went sour then he could redeem what we pit today as plausible deniability. In other words if things went wrong then he could subdued possibly hold the country together as he had done in the preceding seven years. This was another fact that had not been made clear in my previous reading where it seemed more that Washington had a distain for the political side of things and was just not interested in attending the convention.Middlekauff points out that Persuading Washington to come had been a near thing, or seemed so, for he clung to private life after eight years of exhausting service to his country. (Middlekauff, 2005) He did in fact attend and his presence would prove to be a driving force in the establishment of a strong government that was well equipped to lead the country forward. Madison believed that under the right raft that a group of people could basically be governed by a contract in which there were certain rights allowed to them and in exchange there would be a set of rules that would govern the actions of the many. A quote from Madison that I think sums up his views well was If all men were angels, no government would be necessaryyou must first enable the government to control the governed. (Collier, 2007)An opposing view to that of Madisons was that of Alexander Hamilton who was a big supporter of a tier system deal the one they had in England where the King and Parliament both shared power and were opposing forces to each other. He would eventually generate these ideas in front of the committee to get the balance of congress and the president to try and achieve the same balance of power. The government that he was a proponent of was one that was very similar to that of the Brits but the one major change was that everything stayed inner(a) to the government without any outside influences. The views of many of the for-fathers were as diverse as the areas of the country they came from. The convention provide d a unique platform for all of the opposing views to bring their opinions, concerns and ideas to the table for discussion. The convention also allowed for the open sharing of ideas and somewhat of a melting pot for different theories and conjectures. Not only did this format allow for the representatives of their idea to voice and present them but it also allowed for those opposed to object and state their reasons why.The next hat that was throw into the ring was that of Mr. Charles Pinckney who had his own ideas on the right path for the government. His ideas were based on Madisons Virginia Plan but with some major overhauls. The most notable was the fact that the majority of the power would lie with one person and that person would hold office for a period of seven years. The person in power would then consult the congress and then a voting process would begin until a resolution was reached. While the convention never heard the full breadth of the plan, Pinckney was credited with the first official use of the terms President, preindication and Senate. The convention began with the arrival of fifty five of the seventy four men that had been elected to represent their states in Philadelphia. The remainders of them had either had travel difficulties or were tied up with personal or business matters. Philadelphia had been chosen as the meeting place because it was major city with the infrastructure to support the convention and because they believed that the Quaker influence would help to quell some of the heat that was sure to be produced at the convention. Philadelphia was chosen over New York, the only other logical choice for this Quaker influence but was not without its flaws as it did boast 117 pubs and numerous underground gambling facilities. When the men met to go scripting the framework for this great country I think they choose a great spot, of course I am a little biased because it my hometownAs with almost every meeting in which there are people of opposing views the convention did not start off on the best foot. There were arguments and opposing views and the proponents of certain ideas were unwilling to compromise. At one point it was said that Washington stood up and grabbed a fistful of papers and threw them across the desk in distain for the action of the members. He had been riled up to the fact that there was little progress being made because points of contention continually were brought up and little head way was being made. ON the third day a motion was passed that if a matter had already been voted on then it was not allowed to be able to be brought up again.Collier points out that if this had not happened that the convention would have likely collapse after a hebdomad or so. Once some of the rules had been established, we call them board precepts these years, the Father of the nation got down to business of writing the constitution and laying the foundations for the country. Had it not been for Washingtons stron g leadership and battle tested personality the convention could have likely collapsed. The current structure at the time with the states having independent power would have almost certainly led to the downfall of the country and the call for the British to take back over and restore civilization. Washington wasnt about to allow that happen and on May 29th finally got the attention of his fellow Americans and got down to businessOne of the first hurdles was trying to differentiate the Constitution from the Articles of the Confederation which was the governing document of the time. A key difference was that the Confederation document declared congress a one house and the Constitution was call for two. It was not necessarily the number of factions that was the sticking point but more how those two sides would be represented. One popular idea was to have and upper house comprised of the wealthy , more like a house of Aristocrats and a lower house which would act as the voice of the pe ople. This idea was articulated by regulator Morris and was eventually accepted. The growing fear within the walls was that if the poor dominated the government that they would take from the rich and redistribute the wealth. The plan was to have the two houses act as a checks and balances system against each other and therefor it was seen as fair voice for all.As the issues began to get hammered out amongst the states and their representatives one issue still loomed large and that was the actual structure of the congress. It had been agreed on that the New portion of congress would be called the House of Representatives and that the states that had a higher population would have more clout. The remaining question was whether the other side of congress, the Senate, would be structured the same of if each state would have the same pull. The headpieces for each side, James Madison and James Morris had debated this point to exhaustion and neither side nor either man was willing to give up their stand. Brown points out that Mr. Gerry (a colleague of Mr. Wilson) did not like the election by the people.experience he said had shown that the State legislative assemblys drawn immediately from the people did not always possess their confidence (Brown, 2000)while Madison disagreed thinking the legislature should be comprised of the men it represents. There were many different ideas that were brought to the table and much opposition to each point arose. The delegates went back and forth on the issue for days on end until it was finally proposed that the states have equal vote but that anything having to deal with fiscal concerns must be originated in the House so that slender states could not finically burden the country. The vote was put forth and eventually was passed but Collier points out that Historians have seen the Conventions acceptance of equal suffrage in the Senate as a defeat for the strong Nationalists. James Madison, many years later, said that that battle w as the most serious and threatening excitement of the Convention.(Collier, 2005)In the end the Constitutional Convention would outline many of the rules and regulations that would eventually guide this country to greatness but it was not without major contention. The ability to declare war and the rights of the people and their properties would prove to be major sticking points along the way. The side would argue their points until they were blue in the face and then comprise and strong internal leadership would forge the path. The establishment of the Army and the funding for projects were also points which caused great distain within the ranks but eventually were worked to a point where they could accepted, then, on September 17th, asa dulcis Franklin stood up and gave to James Wilson his speech. The contents of the speech basically summed up that while neither side was totally content that they had reached a compromise that everyone was happy with. He articulated that while every piece was not exactly as he would have it that the system was so close to perfect that even their enemies would be astonished. These men worked diligently and overcame so many obstacles that its almost unthinkable. With the leadership and vision of men like Madison, Wilson, Washington, Franklin and Jefferson the document that governs this country was born right their in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. When you read the book Decision in Philadelphia the Constitutional Convention if 1787 by Christopher and James Collier you get unique perspective into this amazing occurrence and it is create verbally in a way that you dont feel as th0ugh you are reading a history book but more like you there watching this debate happen right before your eyesSourcesBrown, R. Euthanasia Should Be Legalized

Euthanasia should be legalized The gift of life story is the most precious gift of god to us. but all the nigh(a) things have some gray shades. If our loved one is suffering from a long lasting illness, sans any hope of recovery, should we take the easy way reveal and go with euthanasia, or should one allow the unhurried to suffer in hope of a miracle. Nowadays, how often we see a persons life being wasted away on the hospital beds after being through a terrible accident or health problem, when there is no scope of improvement. They go through a terrible ordeal not only physically but also emotionally And they are not the sole sufferers. Along with them suffer their loved ones. The life of such patients become living hell. Therefore, euthanasia should be legalized. Mercy killing of such people will be like doing them kindness, after their content lives and saving them from going through living torture. As it is better to have a short, happy and content life as remote to a long one full of sufferings.Today is the era of cut throat competition. As the professionalism increases, people find less and less time for their family. When their family piece is terribly ill without any hope of recovery, he becomes a burden on them. According to them, he has now not only become unable(predicate) and dependent on others, but also demand their time, money and care. As people have become sagacious, they see euthanasia as an easy woof to get rid of their burden as well as responsibility.Making euthanasia legal will give such people open attest to murder and move on with their lives. in my opinion, euthanasia should not be legalised, but it should be an available option for those whose chances of recovery are way to bleak. If the chemise is genuine, that is, the patient is alive only on ventilators and shows no sign of improvement for some years, then euthanasia would be a better option. But if the family of the patient are only looking for an easy way out, then it shou ld not be granted. It all depends on the nature of the case as well as the circumstances. Making euthanasia legal will always be a debatable issue. Humans by nature are strongly bonded to their loved ones, and in general will only go for euthanasia,if all the doors close and even the last ray of hope has been extinguished. But when the time comes in life to make believe this decision, it is essential for ourselves to use not only our minds but also our hearts.

She wanted to die clean of any drugs even though with her giving up caused her much pain. Atticus believes her decision shows true heroism and bravery. He explains this to his children, I want you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. Its when you know youre licked before you even begin, scarce you begin anyways and you see it through no matt er what. Atticus respects Mrs. Dubose for her courage as much as Mrs. Dubose respects Atticus for his wisdom and good advice. Atticus thinks when Tim Johnson had shot that rabid dog that does not make him brave. Also, Atticus wisdom never gives up during the trial. During his closing statement he says to the jury, A court is alone as hefty as its jury, and a jury is only as sound as the men who make it up. I am confident that you gentlemen will review without passion the evidence you have heard, come to a decision, and restore this defendant to his family. In the name of God do your duty. Atticus was trying to remind the jury that Tom is a human being with a family. That was a wise way for Atticus to end his defense strategy at the trial, because his statement leads the jury to confer for hours rather than minutes. Atticus defending Tom Robinson was unacceptable in the town of Maycomb. People respected him because he stood up for what he believed was right. He believed that the c ourt was the only place what provided equal justice but it didnt. He had real courage to do something that other people were scared of. Additionally, Calm is another way to get a line Atticus Finch. He never overreacts under pressure even in the worst situations. The day Atticus hears that Tom Robinson was shot, it was a horrible day for him, but he knew what he had to do. He had to stay calm and tell his family what had happened. Atticus explains the tragedy to Calpurnia, his cook, by saying, Depends on how you look at it. What was one Negro, more or less, among two hundred of em? He wasnt Tom to them, he was an escaping prisoner. Atticus could have become angry with the guards that shot Tom, but instead he takes the time to see Toms death from the guards point of view. Staying calm is important, especially when dealing with someone who is unreasonable. For an example, Bob Ewell, the father who accused Tom of raping his daughter Mayella, is one of the meanest men anyone could come i n contact with. Instead of being mature and talking to Atticus when he was upset, Bob decides to take his anger out on Atticus and spits on his face. Atticus controls his actions by simply wiping his face and walking away. He could have become mad but he maintains his self control. Atticus stays calm, even in the most difficult situations. Thats what makes him so respected by so many people. People doesnt want a leader that over reacts or doesnt stand up for what he believes. They want somebody thats responsible and willing to stay backbreaking in any circumstances. Throughout the Story, Atticus shows that being Kind, wise, and calm is the best way anyone can live his life and be respected. Atticus approaches the worst multiplication with warnings and thoughtfulness while continuing to take care his children. Scout and Jem learn through their father that everyone makes mistakes and that resolving the problems takes skill and patience.Atticuss experiences serve as important life-less ons for his children rather than situations too challenging to handle. His reminder to walk in someones skin rather than judging him teaches his children that all people can be misunderstood just as easily as they can be appreciated. People supported his actions and respected his courage. They just dont have their own courage to speak up for justice. Atticuss views towards the blacks in the community are not socially acceptable however, so people point out him for these bad choices or risks.

Design Lab Chemistry Surface Area

Design Lab 17 Reaction Rate Calcium Carbonate & Hydrochloric acid Design D Introduction In this experiment calcium carbonate will be compose into a flask and mixed with hydrochloric acid to produce calcium chloride, urine and carbon dioxide. The formula for this reaction is CaCO3(s) + 2HCl(aq) CaCl2(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l) Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to determine how the surface area of CaCO3(s) affects the rate of reaction by measuring the pile of CO2(g) produced with time. Background When inviolable reactants are mixed with liquid reactants only the particles on the surface of the material will have direct contact, or collide, to the other liquid reactant particles. When there is to a greater extent surface area there will be more solid particles exposed to collide with other liquid particles. When there are small pieces of the solid reactant, the rate would be faster than if it were larger pieces with the similar mass. There will be more collisions per unit of t ime, which means reaction will precede faster. Variables individual (Changed) ) Surface area of CaCO3 Dependent (Measured) 1) Volume of gaseous product formed (CO2(g)) Controlled (Constant) 1) Mass of CaCO3 2) Temperature of reaction 3) Concentration of HCl 4) Volume of HCl 5) Time intervals for ushering volume weapon speed of light mL Conical flaskSingle-holed rubber stopper 90 g of CaCO3 chips90 g of CaCO3 powder 90 g of CaCO3 tablets100 mL gas syringe 100 mL graduated cylinderDigital Stopwatch 450 ml 1. 0 M HCl Stand & Clamp Electronic balance Safety Procedures 1) Wear safety goggles for protection. 2) wield HCl acid with care. After 5 seconds, record the amount of water displaced on the measuring cylinder. This will be in millilitres 0. 1ml. Repeat this at 10 seconds. 7. Continue recording at 5-second intervals until 3 consistent readings are gained. . Repeat steps 4 through 7 with the other two prepared test tubes to give 3 readings per concentration 9. Repeat steps 3 through 8 with the remaining four prepared concentrations of acid Stat stopwatch Place the marble chips and powdered marble into separate test tubes. leave 10cm of the dilute hydrochloric acid to each of the test tubes and observe the rate at which carbon dioxide is produced Gas Syringe Method Equipment Conical Flask, Bung, Connecting Pipe, Gas Syringe, Hydrochloric Acid, Magnesium Ribbon, Clamp, Stand. For this mode we set up the equipment as followsThe first to do is to gather to motorher all equipment, then once that is done get the conical flask and launch the bung into the top of it. Then connect the pipe from the bung to the gas syringe, making sure that it is air tight. Then once everything is set up get the stop clock ready, measure out the 50ml of hydrochloric acid and pour it into the conical flask and again the same as the burette method simultaneously put the magnesium into the conical flask, put the bung into the top of the flask and start the timer. We took down measurements in 5 second intervals. The gas syringe has a volume of 100ml?.

Haiti Earthquake

Haiti quake is one of the significant events that happened in 2010. The 7. 0 order of magnitude earthquake strikes Haiti on 13th January 2010, Wednesday. It destroyed Haitis capital, Port-au-Prince and many other residences. This fifth deadliest earthquake in the world killed over 100,000 Haitians and left many homeless or seriously injured. The dead were even buried in mass graves. humane aid, rescue and medical teams from exclusively over the world gave their utmost suffice to Haiti immediately. On 22nd January, the search for survivors was then finally called off.Haiti Earthquake is caused mainly by natural causes. Haiti Earthquake occurred along the boundary between the Caribbean and North American plates. Therefore, according to a geophysicist, the two plates moved past each other and generated coarse release of energy, causing the Haiti Earthquake. Not provided the natural causes, Haitis location and environment also contributed to the earthquake. Based on research, 60% of Haitis buildings were unsound and Haiti frequently faced recurrent hazards like cyclone.Haiti also faced political instability as it is one of the poorest country in the western hemisphere and do not lead good communication systems, ports and building style for earthquake resistance. Social causes like the schools and hospitals being unresilient to the earthquake and unprep ared also caused the serious damage of Haiti. The Haiti Earthquake created a huge impact on Haitis economy. Haitis government had to spend approximately $7. 2 billion to $13. 2 billion on the construct of infrastructure. The earthquake also disrupted Haitis trade as the roads and ports were destroyed or strewn with dead bodies. Buildings, including the presidents palace and tax headquarters, were reduced to rubbles. Children were seen digging into the sea of corpses to look for their parents and the injured were pleading in vain for medical attend to. The worst thing was the main prison had collapsed, thus inmates escaped and brought great danger to all Haitians. Countries from all over the world helped in giving aid to Haiti. For example, The UNISDR cooperated with Bill Clinton to build disaster risk reduction tools for Haiti. This helped to reduce the impact of future disasters that efficacy happen to Haiti. capital of Singapores government came up with US$50,000 for the Haitians. However, Singapore did not do much other than giving a mere get along of US$50,000. The governments initial decision to send rescue teams to Haiti was also cancelled as they felt that it was too late and they could not possess useful contributions. This made me felt disappointed s even Indonesia sent aid worth US$22 million and a team of volunteers to help out in Haiti. China was even among the first at the scene with sniffer dogs, medics and monitoring equipment. Not only that, teens from all over the world also helped out. Singapore students from Canberra Secondary School and Dunman High helped to rai se funds for Haitians and gave to charity, Mercy Relief and also organized donation drives. City Harvest Church and CityCare fundamental law even send two medical teams to Haiti. For every purchase made in shops like Espirit, a donation of US$1 was also stipulation to Haiti.Famous Hollywood stars like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie even went to Haiti personally to care for the Haitians and donated US$1 million to Doctor Without Borders. Judging from above, I personally hypothesise that the best solution is the building of disaster-risk tools. This will lessen the impact caused by disasters in the long run. Other solutions are also important but they were only temporary solutions. However, I felt that most importantly was to educate the Haitians on natural disasters as Haiti is very vulnerable to it. By continuously giving help to them, it is not an absolute solution.Perhaps countries who have faced these problems before could teach them the precautions to be taken, ways to calm dow n and act quickly but steadily when faced with disasters. Based on research, the supposedly more destructive Chilean Earthquake suffered lesser casualties than the Haiti Earthquake as they were well-prepared. The care and concern shown by everyone in the world would make the Haitians feel warm. The medical help provided by the medical and rescue teams were what Haitians penuryed the most. With the donations of many countries, Haitians definitely regained hope on rebuilding their motherland back.Haiti EarthquakeHope for children of Haiti On January 12 2010 a devastating tragedy occurred in our world. The beautiful country of Haiti was struck by a 7. 0 magnitude earthquake that changed the country and the lives of concourse living in Haiti. This earthquake stuck Haiti before five pm and was centred about 10 miles south east of port au prince which is the capital city of Haiti. This earthquake is known as one of most powerful earthquakes of the century, that it was felt in eastern parts of Cuba. Prior to the earthquake, the people of Haiti are living eighty percent under the poverty line(Curler, 2010).In results of the earthquake in Haiti, Haiti has been left in poorer economic condition than before. Due to this natural disaster many innocent lives were taken away. The number of casualties kept increasing as the bodies of children were being discovered under the destroyed rumble. The death total at greater than 220 000 people after the earthquake(save the children federation, 2010). Prior to the earthquake Haiti already struggled with 15 of its children population already orphaned or abandoned. This earthquake has caused orphanages to overflow with children with lack of supplies and materials to care for them. They need clothing, food shelter and all the basics necessities to care for them. This tragedy was traumatizing to children because they are so innocent and have less understanding of whats happened. Hundreds of thousands of children have been displaced which is in all probability to have increased their sense of anxiety and fear, especially as aftershocks continue and buildings, including schools, continue to collapse( save the children federation , 2010). Many lives have been saved, as well as many bodies recovered from the rubble.Although there were various doctors and rescue teams who flew to Port-au-Prince to aid the victims of the tragedy, aid did not reach those who were in dire need of it. The aftermath of the earthquake was not the only problem for the Haitians of Port-au -Prince. Port-au-Princes main prison was destructed by the earthquake leaving almost 4, 000 inmates, who survived the earthquake, roaming the streets Rescue commander for Dominican Republic, Delfin Antonio Rodriguez stated, Our biggest problem is security Yesterday they seek to hijack some of our trucks.Today we were barely able to work in some places because of that. Theres looting and people with guns out there, because this country is very poor and people are desperate(Rayner 2010). Rescuers had even been ordered to stop working when the night fell because of fear of being attacked. Children have been profoundly affected by the events they have witnessed and Seeing and feeling buildings collapse, familiar faces dead and piled up around what used to be a neighbourhood and never seeing loved ones again.Haiti may be far away for many but they are us, our human race, in need. Please give generously to our cause. Resources Rayner, G (2010). Haiti earthquake, death toll may fit 200,000. Good to Great †by Jim Collins Essay

I found my reading of Good To Great by Jim Collins very informative and even entertaining. It is interesting to me his concepts and perceptions and how although when you read them they seem rather elementary and obvious, Mr. Collins is indeed an outside the box thinker/writer and it is because of his ease of explaining his concepts that the message simply comes across as easy. The main idea that is presented in this give is that Good is the Enemy of Great. At first glance I had to re-read the statement to make veritable I understood it correctly. My immediate response was to understand it as all too often people, and business decision makers, cave in a simple mark of being good at what they do. Mr. Collins and his research aggroup were able to whittle that idea down to a handful of concepts that although many have the perception are good, but dont clarify their exact goals of greatness. The first concept of Good To Great was Level 5 Leadership. Companies may have great product, great sales, great marketing, etc. but what makes them better than Good? What makes takes them to the Great level? Their Leadership. During the research of this book Mr.Collins and his team identified multiple characteristics these leaders had that lead their company above and beyond just the Good status. Of these the common factor I understood was that of humility and braggy credit to his surrounding soulfulnessnel. Keeping the focus off of look what I did but rather keeping the focus off them, but at the identical time taking responsibility for the mistakes of the company as a whole that they were in charge of looking after. These personalities also showed a great level of fealty and loyalty to their companies and tended to have been promoted from within. Thus having a firm understanding of the culture of the company and knowing a hanker term goal of the company. Secondly the book introduced the concept of First Who, Then What. I related this concept to the phrase Trimming The Fat. Great leaders realize that if youre only as good as your support, than you better drum the indemnify support in the undecomposed places. The Level 5 Leader would have to find those that could lead as well. If you have the right thinkers and decision makers in the right positions, then the what could be figured out.By having the right decision makers from the get go then the goal was already on its way to Great. By doing so you are training your supports to eventually be capable to take your place and instilling a long term masteryion of the companys goals for great. The next concept given was Confront the Brutal Facts With Unwavering Faith. Expanding on having placed the right Who where it was virtually beneficial, it is evenly important to stay concentrate no matter the difficult time. The chapter rivet on sticking to your guns, having faith in your company, and seeing the obstacle though. This again focused on loyalty to the company. As time goes on and the tough time regains its momentum back into the right direction, Problem solving starts with asking the right questions. Its more proactive to take control of our future than being reactive and leaving the destiny up to chance. Companies that were able to make it through the ups and downs of success on their way to Great. Another aspect was for these decision makers to be honest with them and be willing a capable of confronting the hard questions that perhaps they didnt exigency the answer to. But, faced the brutal facts head on.Fourth is the porcupine Concept. This was probably my favorite concept and I think will be the most important lesson I will take and use in my career path. The comparison was stated, The fox knows many involvements, but the hedgehog knows one big thing. I think all too often it gets confused that if youre in charge and making decisions you have to be the most knowledgeable person in that area. Remember though, especially in the totality of the emphasis of this book, y ou are not alone. In the chapter, Mr. Collins worded his idea this way, The Hedgehog Concept is a routine point in the journey from good to great. It typically takes the right people willing to address the brutal facts over an extended period of time to get to the deep understanding of a Hedgehog Concept. What a great statement. It shows the level of determination, loyalty, and staying focused that you realize your true mavin thing. Then you expand on that One thing. It will set you apart from the field and past the Good threshold into the level of Great Culture of Discipline was the next concept. One again commission on hard work and staying focused on your goal of surpassing into the Great realm and not just staying there but forever reproduction the bar.Mr. Collins focused on the idea the in this sense discipline as a frame. It involves the company in its entirety and making sure the companies culture is filled with people committed to discipline in keeping to the standards. E ach of these concepts builds on the one before it and this one is no different. Staying true to his Hedgehog Concept Mr. Collins also introduces his Three Circles concept. By focusing on keeping a Discipline in the company, it will help keep those baffling with their eye on the prize of being able to find that one thing to be great at and to stay on top.Technology throttle was the idea to not let technology become a crutch of sorts. Technology is like any other tool and if used properly it will advert you in your success and getting here faster or with ease. Again, building on the concept before it also emphasizes to stay with your Hedgehog circles and keeping focused on them. Technology will not make you the best or most disciplined. It is a tool and should be used to accelerate your momentum into the right direction of your companys goals, not be the creator of the momentum.Lastly Flywheel and Doom Loop was used to follow up. Its a focus on being able to identify any and all as pects that take you away from the previous concepts. You should always be looking for ways to improve and stay in the lead of the pack. The world of business is ever changing which keeps the bar separating Good from Great ever moving as well. Complacency is a Good trait. Having a system of check and balance working together with a cleaning house mentality will help to keep your company above that bar.

Globalization process refers to the realismwide incorporation of economical, cultural, political as well as religious and social arrangements. There argon other definitions with the IMF referring it as the growing economic interdependence of nations globally through improving quantity and range of inter-country art, free inter study capital flows and enormous widespread of technological knowledge. Secondly, there is topic of international economic markets and greater access to external funds for local, national and other borrowers. Thirdly, its economically beneficial in that there is recognition of an international common market depending on the autonomous substitute of commodities between nations.Fourthly, there is a formation of world political government that maintains the relationship between nations and ensures the exemption arising from social and economic internationalization. In addition, there is a greater information flows between different countries w thus enhancing communication, while encouraging intercultural contacts and adoption of other cultural ideas hence promoting the adoption of new technology and practices hence encouraging unity and harmony. This ensures that consumers be not exploited by pr oducers who whitethorn produce manipulate goods and charge high prices. In the wake of internationalization, productivity is essential so as to meet the international demand for goods and services and remain competitive in the world market. At the analogous time, nations which experience economic growth are fairly placed and their commodities are highly demanded in the world market. It also ensures that canful alternate with others effectively and competently by meeting the required standards as they can afford the current technology and production techniques. Tariffs refers to a tax on extraneous goods once they are imported i. e. immediately on arrival at the port, the custom officer examines the goods and imposes a levy as per the custom formula. There are various types of tariffs such as an ad valorem tariff which is a voice of the value of a good while specific tariff is charged on a commodity as per its weight, volume or surface, but not to its value. It shows many units o f a currency are charged per amount or area. There is also a taxation tariff that refers to a group of levies oblige mainly to conjure up income for the government while protective tariff is mainly obligate to temporarily raise the prices of imports while protecting the local or domestic industries from foreign competition and dumping of unwanted commodities or imports. However, they raise the price of a commodity as per the imposed levy, hence exploiting the consumers of the good or manufacturers who utilise as a raw material, at the same time ii can lead to hand in war when it doesnt favor the imposing country. Trade blocks are formed to minimize or extinguish tariffs against trade with each other and impose protective tariffs on imports outside the block, while custom union has a common external tariff as per agreed strategy the member countries divide the revenue from the tariff on commodities entering the union among themselves.Economic theories argue that tariffs are un necessary disruption of consumers reign and the rule of free market. They argue that it is unjust to the consumers and generally unfavorable for a nation to protect a non performing industry, its healthier to let it collapse and give way a new efficient one to grow in its position. Others claim that protective tariffs that assist in protecting infant industries stand them to develop and withstand competition in the international trade once they expand their size.Similarly, tariffs can be used as a political tool to define the boundaries of an independent country as absence of tariffs establishes a free market system with no borders. However, it has been argued that tariffs assist developing countries as they are lightheaded to collect, and these countries lack institutional capability to efficiently raise revenue and sales taxes.Non tariff barriers to trade are ways to avoid free trade regulations such as those of European Union (EU), World trade organization (WTO) etc. hat restr ict imposition of tariffs such as anti dumping regulations and counterfeit goods measures, which have similar results as tariffs though imposed in special conditions. Other non tariff barriers are in form of processing or production requirements of a commodity with an import ban imposed on those goods which do not meet the requirement or condition. Some trade barriers are openly allowed in very limited conditions, when reckoned important to safeguard health, safety, sanitation or depletable resources.Non tariff barriers to trade take many forms such as state subsidies that favor an individual or industry hence disadvantaging others subsidizing, therefore becoming more competitive in the market as well as national regulations on safety, health, employment and product classification which tend to discriminate some business while favoring others.Quotas are also form of barriers as an industry cant produce more than the recommended quantity, hence rule its production capacity and trade in general. imilarly, foreign exchange control and multiplicity forms a non trade barrier as countries or industries that do not access it cant participate in foreign trade easily, hence it acts as a form of trade barrier as well patents and copyright laws that give an individual or industry the ultimate powers to produce a commodity alone, therefore set trade. Others include bribery, corruption, unfair customs procedures, restrictive licenses, import bans and restrictive import regimes which act as an bulwark to trade.

Dexter vs. Breaking Bad

The the Statesn conceive of Dexter vs. breakout Bad The concept of the American trance has been around us since the foundation of America and is largely what forms it. This exaltation embraces fundamental exoneratedoms that are endowed to each person. It strives for freedom, opportunity, and entrepreneurship for all people. Two television series that incorporate this principle are Dexter and Breaking Bad. Dexter focuses on a blood splash analyst named Dexter who works to find clues/evidence in crime scenes by day, and secretly is a vigilante attendant killer by night.Breaking Bad encompasses a interpersonal chemistry teacher named Walter White who finds forbidden that he has contracted lung cancer and must(prenominal) find a way to pay for his medical bills. presumption his expertise with chemical properties, he decides to cook and sell the illegal and hazardous drug, methamphetamine. Both television shows Breaking Bad and Dexter criticize and portray ideals of the America n Dream in their sophisticated plots and character portrayals. A large aspect of the American Dream is to dream big. With both series, this concept is definitely represented well.In both circumstances, the protagonists in each show must cover p their devious ways to fit in and not be noticed by their surroundings. Walter does this by confining himself to his meth lab when he gets the free time in order to cook with his partner in crime, Jesse Pinkman. Dexter has to mask his acts of murder as well during his nighttime raids where he stalks his next malevolent victim. The average person only if looking at Dexter and Walter from a general standpoint would not have a clue as to what their slope Jobs are.It is for this reason that the two shows do much(prenominal) worthy Jobs of depicting the characters as underdogs with lifestyles that would go unseen by most individuals. The family life and its significance is another key component to look at in both of the series. The concept of a strong family is a vital part of the American Dream. Both Dexter and Walter must support their families needs and remain in good standing as fathers of their house. In both shows, the chemistry between the families lack greatly and thus successfully criticize that part of the American Dream.Walter must forget for his family while enduring the unfortunate hardship of his progressing lung cancer. Although he does end up providing enough money, Skylar, his wife, demands a disarticulate due to his chronic lying bout his whereabouts and his ignorance to his other fatherly demands socializing with his family and being an exceptional situation model. Dexter criticizes the notion of a structured and united family life. This original characteristic usually consisted of a mirthfully married husband and wife that were raising a few children in a white sentry fenced house. This stereotype is definitely combated in Dexter. Although Dexter does have a toddler son named Harrison whom he loves affectionately and relates himself with his beginning, Dexter also has relations with numerous women throughout the series. Just a few women he does come-on up with are Lila West, Rita Bennett, and Hannah McKay. America has its dark side. It is very apparent to the viewer that both shows do a superb Job at displaying this unfortunate reality.By doing so, the shows simultaneously mock the stereotypical characteristic of the American Dream ideal that the struggles and In Breaking Bad, there are numerous events that take place that embody this notion, such as the drug cartels that are largely organized under the main distri entirelyor, Gustavo Fring. There are galore(postnominal) murders that occur as well, such as when Gale Boetticher (another meth. ab partner with Walter) is shot and killed by Jesse Pinkman due to Pinkman fearing that Gale would flip him as a partner of Walter, which would be a large financial disadvantage for Pinkman. It is no surprisal that Dexter provides an ab undant share of violence as well. Being centered on a serial killer, what would one expect? Dexter often makes his victims suffer the punishment that he believes they deserve. A prime guinea pig of this is when he hunts down and manages to abduct the infamous bathtub killer Arthur Mitchell. Dexter chats with Arthur about their beliefs of life and ridicules Arthur for killing fair victims. Finally, Dexter bludgeons Arthur to death with the back of a hammer to end the scene on a sadistic, save satisfying note. The method in which Walter gains his money is a superb example of another criticism of the American Dream ideal. The labor-intensive factory working environment was the original norm of how many Americans in the middle 50s found themselves in. Walter shatters this stereotype with his frequent seven-fgure drug deals with various clients. Not only does Walter live out this get- rich-quick mentality, but several others, such as Jesse Pinkman, Gustavo Fring, and Gale Boetticher a re shown throughout the series to achieve wealth in a similar way the exchanging of illegal drugs.Although the American Dream ideal has evolved over time, it is still largely prevalent in todays society. The two television series do wonderful Jobs of portraying and criticizing the American Dream. Some of the major(ip) characteristics that they target are the importance of family life, the mentality to dream big, and the reality of the dark side of America. The relations, portrayals, and criticisms of the American Dream ideal between Dexter and Breaking Bad can be easily deciphered if one Just simply looks for them.

Botswana: A Diamond in the Rough Essay

1) The Harvard case, Botswana A Diamond in the Rough, describes the portentous case of Botswanas sustained frugal rise from near absolute poverty to a country with a 10% average annual GDP growth for more than four decades. This case shows that healthy stinting gains can be achieved by a mixture of formal institutions and ad hoc reserves for missing institutions. When Botswana gained its independence in 1966, the country pretermited umteen of the institutions deemed essential for sparing growth by most prosperous developed nations. These wanting institutions included a central bank, a guinea pig currency, basic administrative structures, market institutions, and the ability to affiliate to the global markets and apply external tariffs. Yet, Botswana was unique among its neighbors in that it held institutions such as a stable, democratic authorities supported by a charismatic leader and a constitution which upheld the liberties of a free press, lawful transparency, and prope rty rights. Botswanas institute of judicature as well as lacked the discriminatory practices and internal strife present in more of the neighboring countries.Botswana was able to supplement its lack of many formal institutions with substitute ad hoc solutions which filled many gaps. The countrys initial lack of its own central bank and national currency was supplemented with the countrys use of the South African Monetary Union until Botswana was able to establish its own currency and central bank in 1976. Similarly, Botswana relied on the South African Customs Union (SACU) for application of import tariffs utilise to raise tax tax revenue and protect infant domestic industries.Gaps left in the countrys infrastructure by weak public backup and an underdeveloped private sector were patched with help from financing and administration given by transnational firms, development institutions, as well as the creation of some of its own formal institutions. The most conspicuous of the se situations was the countrys brokered relationship with the DeBeers Corporation which provided the country which technical expertise in a highly profitable industry, the establishments of rhombus townships complete with working infrastructure, as well as a much needed source ofrevenue.Botswana withal used funds derived from development aid organizations and the financing agents such as the World Bank and the Canadian International Development Agency to substitute for its lack of private equity markets and banks. In addition, the country used the publicly traded company, Botswana RST, to attract external investing to aid in fully exploiting their natural resource potential. Investors in this company included multinational mining firms including AMAX and Anglo-American. Botswanas history of stableness and protection of intellectual property rights also contributed to private foundations and major drug companies such as Harvards AIDS Institute, Bill and Melinda Gates AIDS initi ative, and Merck component part to combat the brutal onslaught of the AIDS virus in the country.Botswana used a series of national development plans established by its Ministry of Finance and Development to guide future government spending. Contributions and returns from foreign investment were reinvested into infrastructure and education, while budget surpluses were stockpiled to hedge against sudden drops in revenue caused by potential downturns in the diamond market. Institutions such as the Mineral Right in Tribal Territories Act vested mineral rights in the central government rather than the hands of the tribal leaders while the two special funds, the normal Debt Service Fund and the Revenue Stabilization Fund, were established to funnel mining revenues into loans for local authorities and parastatal bodies. The Botswana accommodate Corporation was a formal institution which used diamond revenues to finance construction projects while the Botswana actor Corporation and the Water Utilities Corporation were created to serve similar functions for electricity and water. The Botswana Development Corporation, National Development Bank, and the Botswana go-ahead Development Unit were charged with allocating diamond revenue to diversify the economy.Botswanas institutional development was a process. It began with virtually no formal institutions. Informal solutions led to the development of formal institutions, which allowed for Botswanas idiosyncratic economic stability.2) The most evident pro of nationalizing Botswanas diamond industry would be to achieve the short-term gains by merchandising stockpiled diamonds. Unfortunately, doing so would cost Botswana years of established credibility as it would require the country to renege on their previous agreements with the DeBeers Corporation. Such an action would deter future investors into Botswana, as well as cause the disadvantage of their largest foreign investor, DeBeers. Loss of the DeBeers connection wou ld cost Botswana the future gains associated with continued expertise in the field of diamond mining, infrastructure improvements historically provided by DeBeers in areas servicing the mines, and also the administrative capability of a major international corporation. The most significant con would likely be the loss of DeBeers as a keeper of the cartel practices necessary to preserve the price premium associated with have got diamonds. If left to navigate the sales and stockpiling of diamond by itself, the country would face the historically difficult task for a poor government that relies heavily on commodity sales to self-regulate commodity sales, and thus government revenues, while still fit the demands of maintaining the cartel.3) The extent to which Botswanas model is replicable outside of Botswana would certainly depend on a variety of factors some inwardly the control of central governments, and others environmentally or socially determined. The presence of an extremely v aluable natural resource(s) is a key component in Botswana growth model. While other countries also share this component, many lack the peace and stability associated with a stable government body and a tolerant society. Botswanas government offers stability and social climate free of the restrains presented by ethnic, tribal, and religious conflicts. Additionally, mining interests are centrally controlled and not base to regional battles over mineral wealth. Likewise, discrimination between groups is not a prevalent issue in this country.Botswana also benefited from Tsekedi Khamas strong leadership in bringing new policies to the forefront and unifying the countrys economic policies among the unlike tribal groups. The countrys adherence to prudent social and macroeconomic policies also held a large role in the creation of anatmosphere of growth and foreign investment. The credibility established through years of sound economics practices, legal transparency, property rights, sta ble government, and free press created a more welcoming environment for foreign investment than many other developing nations. The extent to which this model is replicable outside of Botswana depends on the level of homage to the social and macroeconomic policies described above and a working mix of formal institutions and adequate substitute organizations. Although a full range of formal institutions are not necessary to achieve continued economic growth, substitutes must arise where the institutions are lacking to provide the necessary functions lost by their absence.
